My name is Miriam and I'm 31 years old. I am a NASM-certified personal trainer, mum and fitness business owner of Beyond Shapes in West London.
After struggling with my weight my entire life, I learned how to make my favourite meals using healthier ingredients and started doing cardio and strength training. Growing up, my weight was always my identity. I was “Miriam, the big girl.” I had a family that showed love and appreciation through food for every emotion. Happiness, grief, celebrations—you name it—food was always involved. Within my immediate family, there was no regard for proper nutrition. My mom, dad, and brothers were all larger-bodied, so I didn't notice my weight at home but I was well over 80kg in middle school, and the weight continued to pack on into my high school years reaching 100kg.
IT WAS TIME TO START EDUCATING MYSELF ON WHAT A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE MEANT
I didn’t just want to take someone’s word for it and follow a trendy diet. I wanted to actually learn what foods were best for me, and how my body digested them, doing this and sticking to the new acquired knowledge I've been able to lose 15 kg before i even stepped a foot in the gym. Nutrition really is 80 percent of the battle. When I did begin exercising, I focused on cardio three to five days a week and strength training. This really helped get me toward my 40 kg weight loss faster. Since losing weight, exercise and fitness and nutrition became a newfound passion in my life. That's when i moved to London with my son and decided to follow my passion becoming a personal trainer, i wanted to help others break their barriers and believe that achieving their fitness goals is possible, with consistency, discipline and patience.
It all starts from the decision about the life I wanted for myself and refusing to give up no matter what. It’s not always a straight path. You’re going to have ups and downs, twists and turns, and even some obstacles along the way. But as long as you keep pushing forward each day, there is nothing that can stop you from reaching your goals. Every single day you wake up with a fresh opportunity to push forward and be the best version of yourself.
